Development of Phalaenopsis Orchids for the Mass-Market
نویسنده
چکیده
INTRODUCTION It is widely recognized that potted Phalaenopsis production has increased tremendously in last few years. The specific statistics for Phalaenopsis are not available, for the US Department of Agriculture only keep records on total orchid production and sales. However, over 75% of all orchids sold are Phalaenopsis (American Orchid Society, pers. commun.). In 2000, wholesale orchid sales were approximately $100,000,000 (Fig. 1). The only crop with a higher value was poinsettia. During the last five years orchids sales has been increasing, unlike all the other ornamental crops (Fig. 2). Large scale, potted Phalaenopsis production is occurring in the Netherlands, Germany, China, Taiwan, United States, and Japan. In one cooperative venture, cultivar development is taking place in the Unites States; selected clones are being placed into tissue culture in Japan; mass proliferation of the tissue cultures is occurring in China; and the tissue cultured plants are being grown to maturity in the Netherlands. In 1957, James Shoemaker stated that “orchid growing has not fully achieved the transition from a hobby to an industry.” Today, orchid growing is more than just an industry, it is an international business.

The Effect of Pollination Time and Gibberellic Acid (GA3) on the Production and Seed Germination of Phalaenopsis Orchids
The germination power of orchids (Orchidaceae family) seems to betoo weak due lack of albumen. The study carried out with various treatments including pollination time and GA3 for breaking dormancy and increasing seed germination of orchids. The effect of pollination time (8 periods from January to August) and gibberellic acid (0, 500, 1000 and 1500 mg L-1) were studied on germination of Phalae...
متن کاملExpression analysis of fertilization/early embryogenesis-associated genes in Phalaenopsis orchids
One of the distinct reproductive programs in orchid species is pollination-triggered ovule development and megasporogenesis. During sexual reproduction, fertilization occurs days to months after pollination. The molecular mechanisms evolved to carry out this strategic reproductive program remain unclear. In the August issue of Plant Physiology 1 , we report comprehensive studies of comparative ...
متن کاملCloning and characterization of a PI-like MADS-box gene in Phalaenopsis orchid.
The highly evolved flowers of orchids have colorful sepals and fused columns that offer an opportunity to discover new genes involved in floral development in monocotyledon species. In this investigation, we cloned and characterized the homologous PISTALLATA-like (PI-like) gene PhPI15 (Phalaenopsis PI STILLATA # 15), from the Phalaenopsis hybrid cultivar. The protein sequence encoded by PhPI15 ...
متن کاملA Modified ABCDE Model of Flowering in Orchids Based on Gene Expression Profiling Studies of the Moth Orchid Phalaenopsis aphrodite
Previously we developed genomic resources for orchids, including transcriptomic analyses using next-generation sequencing techniques and construction of a web-based orchid genomic database. Here, we report a modified molecular model of flower development in the Orchidaceae based on functional analysis of gene expression profiles in Phalaenopsis aphrodite (a moth orchid) that revealed novel role...
متن کاملHeadspace solid-phase microextraction analysis of volatile components in Phalaenopsis Nobby's Pacific Sunset.
Phalaenopsis is the most important economic crop in the Orchidaceae family. There are currently numerous beautiful and colorful Phalaenopsis flowers, but only a few species of Phalaenopsis have an aroma. This study reports the analysis volatile components present in P. Nobby's Pacific Sunset by solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coupled with gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography/mass s...
